Introduction
The Department of Anatomy is one of the foundational departments of Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai, dedicated to providing a strong anatomical foundation for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The department is committed to excellence in teaching, academic development, research, and professional training.
The department provides comprehensive instruction in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Radiological Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy through interactive lectures, practical sessions, dissection, demonstrations, seminars, group discussions, and problem-based learning. Modern teaching methodologies and clinically oriented approaches are incorporated to help students understand the relevance of anatomy in diagnosis, clinical practice, and surgical procedures.
The department offers postgraduate training in M.D. Anatomy, with emphasis on advanced anatomical knowledge, teaching skills, research methodology, dissection, and academic presentations. Postgraduate training includes seminars, journal discussions, group discussions, pedagogy sessions, practical demonstrations, assessments, and hands-on anatomical learning.
The department caters to the MBBS programme, with 150 undergraduate students admitted annually, and also contributes to the teaching and training of students enrolled in various Allied Health Sciences programmes, including Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, B.Sc. Optometry, B.Sc. Dialysis Technology, B.Sc. Cardiac Technology, B.Sc. Radiotherapy & Imaging Technology, B.Sc. Radiotherapy Technology, Diploma in Radiodiagnosis Technology, Diploma in Radiotherapy Technology, and B.Sc. Anaesthesia Technology.
A major strength of the department is its active involvement in research and academic activities. Faculty and students undertake research projects and scholarly activities, including projects supported through ICMR and other academic collaborations. The department also actively conducts and participates in CME programmes, academic competitions, anatomical model-making activities, cadaveric workshops, and hands-on training programmes aimed at enhancing anatomical and surgical skills.
The department places particular emphasis on clinical and applied anatomy, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration with surgical and other clinical specialties. Cadaver-based workshops and hands-on training provide valuable opportunities for postgraduate students, medical professionals, and trainees to develop a deeper understanding of three-dimensional anatomy and its application in clinical and surgical practice.
With a commitment to academic excellence, innovation, research, ethical practice, and compassionate service, the Department of Anatomy strives to nurture competent healthcare professionals with a strong understanding of human anatomy and its clinical relevance.
Infrastructure
The Department is well equipped with a Dissection hall and Histology lab to train the undergraduates and post graduate students. It also has research lab with required equipments. It houses a museum with separate sections for comparative anatomy, sectional anatomy and embryology lab. Different laboratories of the department conduct both basic and applied researches.
Spectrum of Activities:
Both conventional and modern methodology of teaching and learning anatomy is being applied by the department. Modern Methodology include 3D Embryology models, Clinical charts, Sectional Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy. The Faculty members and Residents are actively involved in academic activities such as journal club presentations, Pedagogy for continued learning.

◈   Clinical charts for objectively structured practical examination.

◈   Sectional Anatomy enables cardiology and Forensic residents to enhance their knowledge on anatomy.

◈   Cadaveric Workshop have been conducted in association with Department of Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT surgeons and Neurosurgeons to enhance their hands on skill as well as health care services.
